What makes Getreidegasse so special?

Historically: its location! Already in the Roman Age it was a trade road to today's Bavaria. Between Salzach and Mönchsberg the businesses developed and Getreidegasse quickly became Salzburg's first address. Aristocracy and important clerks settled here and enhanced the street's reputation; some of the city's most famous sons and daughters lived here.

Mozart's Birthplace can be found at number 9 and is probably the most famous and popular building on Getreidegasse. Since his birth in 1756 the Salzburg musician and composer lived on the 3rd floor of the so called "Hagenauer Haus” with his parents and sister Nannerl until 1773. Today it accommodates a museum.

Getreidegasse today

Getreidegasse's uniqueness is mirrored by the many elaborately designed and decorated, partly historic, shop and merchant signs that you can instantly see when you enter the street. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Salzburg, all shops have to keep the signs in this historic style, even the new businesses.

Other special features are the many passages in both directions. Here you will find true gems: cafes, shops and wonderful inner courtyards invite you to lovely strolls and walks if the weather is nice. These passages were formerly used to clean the whole street. On the upper side the built-up channel was diverted to take the street's dirt with it and drain into River Salzach through the passages.
