Salzburg Cathedral

Impressive and magnificent in Salzburg's old town

It creates the scenery for the world-famous play "Jedermann” ("Everyman”), it has seen 10 fires since it was built and is still one of the most popular landmarks in the city of Mozart. The cathedral in the middle of Salzburg's old town is a cathedral church from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg and definitely worth the visit.

The baroque cathedral is impressive 101 metres long and its steeple is 81 metres high. But only when you enter you will realise its true size: there are 900 seats but it accommodates around 10,000 people. If you take a look over your shoulder you will see the huge organ. There are four other organs in the crossings under the cathedral’s dome.

Salzburg Cathedral's history

The predecessor buildings were built by Bishop Virgil around 770, but the first building got destroyed in a fire. After several fires between 800 and 1180 Archbishop Wolf Dietrich decided on new construction plans, but the building remained unfinished. Only his successor Markus Sittikus continued the construction work and it was consecrated by Paris Lodron in 1628. In the Second World War parts of the cathedral were again destroyed.

In 1949 around 35,000 people celebrated the restoration of this important church. From 1995 to 1998 Salzburg Cathedral was totally renovated and in 2007 it had to be repaired after a couple of storm damages. Today you can marvel at the cathedral in all its glory in the middle of Salzburg's old town.

Salzburg Cathedral's location

You truly can't miss the cathedral. It is located right underneath Fortress Hohensalzburg and is surrounded by Residentsplatz, Kapitelplatz and Domplatz. It kind of builds the centre of Salzburg's old town and as a guest at Amadeus Hotels you will reside only one minute away from it.
