Follow the Trapp family’s footsteps in Salzburg and its surroundings

It is hardly surprising that The Sound of Music does not fail to enchant billions of viewers around the globe: a touching family’s story and easy-going songs, framed by the fairy-tale scenery of Salzburg and its surroundings are the ingredients that produced a world-wide success. The Sound of Music theme tours are equally popular with Salzburg’s international visitors where they can experience the real filming locations for themselves.

Frohnburg Castle in Salzburg, Austria
Shooting location of the musical

Mirabell Gardens

As one of the most frequently used locations for the film, Maria and the children can be seen here as they sing “Do-Re-Mi”, frolicking through the Zwerglgarten and round the Pegasus fountain. This scene is one of the film’s most loved.

Leopoldskron Castle

The facade facing the lake functioned as the rear view of the Trapp family’s residence.

Frohnburg Castle

Some of the outdoor scenes in front of the Trapps’ house were shot on the premises of Frohnburg Castle.

Hellbrunn Castle and Park

Here, the film team used the pavilion that was built solely for The Sound of Music.

Nonnberg Convent

The old monestary just below Salzburg Castle served as a backdrop for the scene where Maria forgets the time over dancing and singing. The Benedictine monastery can also be seen in one of the flight scenes.

The real Trapp family wins the first prize at a folk singer competition organized by the Salzburg Festival. In the film, they also win a competition. The family sings their farewell, the famous song “Edelweiß”, in the Felsenreitschule before their planned escape during the award ceremony.

At Lake Mondsee, the Trapp family can be seen during bicycle tours to the Salzburger Land. The marriage scenes were shot in the picturesque setting of Mondsee Convent.

Further scenes of the film were shot in the marvellous surroundings of Salzburg, for example in Anif Castle, Hohenwerfen Castle, Fuschl, St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang and in the Berchtesgadener Land. Also the Untersberg appeared on the screen, filmed from a helicopter.
