Salzburg Puppet Theatre
Seeing Mozart's "The Magic Flute” or one of the other operas at the world-famous Salzburg puppet theatre is a must during every Salzburg stay. If you think that this is a children's theatre then you're wrong. Operas of the big opera house's repertoire are performed to leading recordings. The puppet theatre is of course also a great medium for introducing children to the big operas.
World-famous artists, especially directors and set designers, work for the Salzburg puppet theatre. The Salzburg Festival's and Easter Festival's contribution is another sign for the performance quality.
Some of the world's best puppeteers work at the "small opera house” and get the puppets moving. World-famous directors and set designers breathe life into the handmade puppets and offer you unforgettable theatre moments in Salzburg.
The puppet theatre is not only a performance venue but also provides puppeteer trainings and accommodates its own sound studio and a cunning lighting system. Every year around 160 performances take place at the miniature theatre and the touring theatre group adds another 100 performances.

The Salzburg puppet theatres looks back on a 100-year long history. In the early 20th century the theatre hosted its first performances; Mozart's "Bastien and Bastienne” was staged in 1913. Very early on children's operas were included in the theatre's repertoire and it was in the interwar period when Salzburg's puppet theatre became Salzburg's artistic centre.
After various guest performances abroad and several successful premieres the theatre had to close for a short time due to the war in 1944. Since its reopening the Salzburg puppets have again been very successful and celebrated their 100-year anniversary in 2013.
