Open Air Museum

Experience the past under the open sky

The Salzburg Open Air Museum is Salzburg's biggest museum. It is located at the foot of Untersberg and shows representative buildings of the five Salzburg Land counties in an enchanting scenery and in a unique way informs visitors about the rural building and living culture. Stroll through the Open Air Museum grounds with its 100 reconstructed original buildings and taste the historic outdoor air.

Salzburg's biggest museum

Go on a journey through the centuries: rural life, construction and economy in the 15th-20th century Salzburg Land is documented at the museum. Old mills and farms, a power plant from the early times of electricity production and much more can be seen on the 50 hectare big museum grounds.

The buildings

The exhibited houses show a great diversity: farms, mills and residential houses, as well as stables, clerical buildings and handicraft businesses from former days deck the museum grounds in Großgmain.

Exhibitions

The many exhibitions in the open air museum present themselves in a very diverse and detailed way. Visit the "Lungau – Land hinter'm Tauern” permanent exhibition at Abrahamhof. 270m² are dedicated to the Salzburg Land's county of Lungau, its history, geography and folk culture. An classic car exhibition shows old agricultural vehicles. There are also exhibitions about rural breweries, old fence shapes, the lives of the servants and also about mouse traps, ploughs, power plants, light railways and the Großglockner High Alpine Road.

Museum train

The huge area is best explored by museum train. It runs through the Open Air Museum on a 1.7km long track and takes you conveniently to the museum's attractions. The rail route leads through the whole area from "Flachgau” rail station at the museum's entrance to its final destination "Pongau” and offers barrier-free access.
