Excursion to the Lakeland area Salzkammergut

Salzkammergut Lakeland Area

Imperial recreation in the wonderful natural environment

A trip to the country of operetta with its more than 70 lakes, the wonderful nature reserve and hiking paths as well as many cultural sights is always a good idea, no matter what the weather is like. Emperor Franz Josef and his family already enjoyed summer holidays here, as did many intellectuals and artists in the monarchy era – with good reason!

Visit the renowned towns and lakes in the Salzkammergut and breathe in the relaxed atmosphere of the Salzkammergut, a great alternative to the city. Lakes with drinking water quality, mountains with stunning panoramic views, forests with diverse flora and fauna and a range of other attractions worth seeing.

Lake Wolfgangsee

The unique Gothic winged altar by Michael Pacher can be found in St. Wolfgang, just like the world-famous "Weiße Rössl am Wolfgangsee”, which became famous with the eponymous operetta. St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee is a picturesque town worth seeing. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's mother was born here.

From St. Gilgen you can go on an idyllic boat ride on Lake Wolfgangsee; its lidos and cosy lakeside spots are very inviting on a hot summer's day. The Bad Ischl spa city presents itself as the Salzkammergut's opera metropolis. It is here where the annual Lehár Festival takes place in the summer and where you will find the Franz Lehár Museum.
The legendary Krottensee near Gmunden and Schloss Hüttenstein near St. Gilgen will also delight you.

Fuschlsee im Salzkammergut

Mondseeland

The Mondseeland with its lovely town Mondsee in the centre offers yet another great excursion destination. Mondsee Palace is very popular as a wedding venue, at Rauchhaus and the farmer's museum you can dive into the region's and locals' past and the Protestant church as well as the St. Michael parish present impressive church architecture. Take a walk along the lake promenade or go on a shopping tour in the lovely pedestrian area, where traditional cafés invite you to a nice little break.

Lake Fuschlsee

In the forests around Fuschl the Salzburg prince-archbishops used to organise noble hunts. Today the former Fuschl hunting lodge accommodates an exclusive luxury hotel. Gently glide over the crystal-clear lake on the "Fuschlerin” while you marvel at this wonderful spot of land with the palace fishery from the water. Back on shore Schloss Fuschl is perfect for a visit. Don't miss out on Rumingmühle; this water mill from the 19th century let's you discover the old corn grinding tradition.

Your route to the Salzkammergut

From Salzburg take the bus or your own car to get to the idyllic lakeland area via a scenically beautiful road. The journey takes about 30 minutes. Out of the city and breathing in nature is the motto.

The highlight en route: the first lake you see is Lake Fuschlsee with its luring colours: turquoise, blue or on some days even green is how you will find it picturesquely situated left of the road.

Your trip to the wonderful Salzkammergut will leave a long-lasting impression that you can reminisce about in the evening back at your Hotel Goldgasse in Salzburg's old town; in the cosy atmosphere of the traditional inn on the ground floor. Contact us now for your room in Salzburg.
