The charm of Neustadt
What Getreidegasse is for Salzburg's old town, Linzer Gasse is for Salzburg's new town "Neustadt”, on the Salzach east bank. The ancient street starts at Platzl right at the wide Staatsbrücke bridge and leads left of Kapuzinerberg all the way out of town in direction of the former Linzer Tor (gate to Linz) or today's Franz-Josef-Straße
The ancient street is protected by Kapuzinerberg, one of Salzburg's popular local mountains on the right riverbank in so called Neustadt.
A street with history
The historic street starts at Platzl directly at Staatsbrücke. Up until 1894 it ended at Linzer Tor leading out of town. Linzer Gasse has always been very busy.
During the Roman era it was considered to be the artery between the boroughs on the right side of River Salzach. It also served as a very important outbound street out of the capital and residence city Salzburg. The geographic route to Linz gave it its name
On both sides of Linzergasse town houses of the 14th and 15th century can be found. Affected by the town fire in 1818 Linzer Gasse was then restored in its old shine. Shops, handicraft businesses as well as traditional inns and hotels have always lined the gorgeous street that is a pendant to world-famous Getreidegasse.
Linzer Gasse worth a visit
Linzer Gasse has developed into a very popular shopping mile during the past years. Today various shops and cafes can be found on Linzergasse. Sebastiankirche is especially worth a visit as well as the beautiful but steep path up to Kapuzinerberg that is lined with Passion chapels.
Paracelsushaus
When you stroll through Linzergasse various other sights and landmarks will appear. Around 1540 the house at number 3 used to be residence of the great doctor Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim – better known as Paracelsus.
Engel-Apotheke
The Engel-Apotheke pharmacy at number 7 has been located here since 1809 and is best known for its probably most famous pharmacy assistant: Salzburg poet Georg Trankl, whose residence is located on the left riverbank on Waagplatz, only a few minutes away from the Amadeus Hotels.
Gablerbräu
On the facades of the traditional business Gablerbräu, at number 9, plaques remind of other famous Linzergasse residents, amongst them singer Richard Mayr, who played "Ochs von Lerchenau” in Richard Strauss' "The Knight of the Rose”.
Way of the cross on Kapuzinerberg
An impressive archway with stairs leads from Linzer Gasse up on Kapuzinerberg, which is also accessible from Steingasse and Schallmooser Haupstraße. Follow the small and steep way of the cross and you will reach the former residence of European writer Stefan Zweig, which is located opposite Kapuziner monastery.
If you continue walking along the remaining parts of the city wall, which dates back to the Thirty Years' War period, you will find yourself on a panoramic viewing platform. The views over Salzburg and Festungsberg with Hohensalzburg Castle as well as over the surrounding natural environment in Salzburg and Berchtesgadener Land is definitely worth the challenging ascent.
